V shape plane dropping bombs on a broken child

War

This piece depicts Shoshana's trauma with flames descending from the heavens, ending in six points representing the six million murdered. At the base of the tapestry, a woman is seated bent over in mourning. Her empty womb represents future unborn generations. Between the woman and the flames are two arms, one wrapped in tefillin (phylacteries), the other bearing tattoo numbers in a gesture that asks the question "Why?".

Shoshana initially considered inserting Hebrew letters signifying the name of God into the tapestry. After grappling with the existential problem of where to place God's name, she chose to leave it out. In its place, she creatively introduced an open weave to reflect the moral indifference of a world that could permit the Holocaust to take place.
