The Beginning

In Shoshana's first woven piece, there was no predetermined pattern. One can note the contrast between the open and closed weave sections of this work. This possibly attests to the beginning of Shoshana's attempt to grapple with her Holocaust trauma - struggling to peer inward and yet remain removed from an overwhelming experience.

Shoshana started the tapestry in a weaving class. She met with resistance from her teacher who saw weaving as a craft, not as an expression of inner feelings. Shoshana subsequently discontinued the class, purchased a loom of her own, and became self-taught.

Long, vertical tapestry. Open weave with stick horizontal in numerous places. All earth tones
